Welcome to the 40th anniversary of Capital City Pride. We’ve got an exciting weekend of events ranging from a Pride Fun Run to Drag King DSM to a performance by Kimbra. This year’s event is especially important as it offers a chance for the Des Moines community, LGBTQ people, and allies to come together to show unity while celebrating the fantastic culture and successes that have been achieved throughout the last four decades.

Capital City Pride Speaker Series - Dr. Raynard S. Kington

Since graduating with his B.S. at the age of 19 and his M.D. at 21 from the University of Michigan, Dr. Kington has had a prestigious career. He has held a range of jobs including positions with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Senior Scientist at the RAND Corporation, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCLA. He is currently the President of Grinnell College.

Silent Disco

Capital City Pride and Iowa Safe Schools proudly present the first annual silent disco. Join friends of all ages for a celebration of our diverse community and culture with music from local DJs. You’re not going to want to miss this dance party!

Show your Pride at Capital City Pride’s first Pride Fun Run/Walk. As part of this year’s Pride weekend, this festive run will celebrate our many LGBTQ members, allies, and organizations.

Pride Pet Parade

Schedule an appointment at the groomers, put on your best leash and collar combo and join Capital City Pride at the inaugural Pride Pet Parade, sponsored by Meredith Corporation and Tito’s Vodka. If you think your furry-friend has what it takes to compete we’ll be awarding the Pride Spirit Award, Owner Look-a-like, and Best in Show.

Meredith Corporation will be giving out free rainbow bandanas for the first 200 pets.

Singled Out

Join Capital City Pride in our own version of the 1990’s MTV dating game “Singled Out”, a “throw-back” game show featured on MTV from 1995 to 1998. This game will feature a group of 50 men and a group of 50 women competing for a date with the male or female contestant.

We have an afternoon of entertainment planned starting with the Opening Ceremony at 1:45 p.m. Throughout the afternoon, we'll have local DJs, Girls Rock, Sarah Routh, Jen Wiater, Chicago Drag, and more.

Drag King DSM

We’ve teamed up with Drag King DSM to bring an amazing show where kings reign supreme! DKDSM is a production of talent known for its ability to strip the art of drag to its core. This event will bring the masses together to celebrate individuality and support artistry/performance no matter who you are, how you identify, or where you come from.

Pride Progressive Worship

Join us Sunday morning for an uplifting, progressive, non-traditional service led by Pastor Debbie Griffin and the Downtown Disciples. Griffin, who was awarded Capital City Pride’s 2018 Ally of the Year, established Downtown Disciples as a progressive Christian community that is LGBTQ + affirming and proclaims #BlackLivesMatter.

Pride Parade

The 2018 Pride Parade will once again take place in the Historic East Village of downtown Des Moines with the parade making its iconic route from the Statehouse and traveling west on Grand Avenue.
