Speaker Series: Rutger Goethart

In his role as a Senior Advisor, Rutger focuses on corporate human rights due diligence, supporting companies to assess, prioritize, address and report (potential) human rights impacts. He guides companies in a practical way in the application of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, such as obtaining internal buy-in, the development of strategy and policies, risk assessment, external stakeholder engagement and feedback, relevant action-planning and external communication and reporting. Currently Rutger is supporting Shift – the leading center of expertise on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (https://shiftproject.org). For Shift, he works directly with various companies and organizations in assessing human rights risks and implementing ways to respect human rights.

Rutger’s areas of expertise are human/labour rights and public affairs, in a national and international context:

  1. Business & human Rights, across the globe
  2. International labour/industrial Relations, including European Works Councils
  3. Public/government affairs & politics, on EU/international/national level

Rutger gained this experience through work at the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG), supporting the development of the social European Sustainability Reporting Standards; at HEINEKEN, as Global Public Affairs manager and Manager International Labor Relations, globally responsible for international labor Relations and labor & human rights; as International Public Affairs Manager and as Manager International Labor Relations Manager for the Postal & Express Company TNT. His first practical experience in Labor Rights & Relations and Public Affairs was as Secretary International Social Affairs for the Dutch Employers’ Federation.

He studied at the Faculty of Law of the Utrecht University and is specialized in Labor and Civil law. He speaks English and Dutch and is proficient in French, Spanish and German.
